Abstract

This article examines the ways to manage cultural diversity in public schools. An intercultural approach to education requires new principles and new methods including intercultural mediation. As an example of cultural diversity it analyzed the issue of symbols -usually religious symbols- in public schools. In Spain, in particular, this question mainly concerns the wearing of clothing that reveal the religious or cultural identity of belonging, especially the Islamic headscarf (hijab). The analysis of these aspects is done from a gender perspective in order to provide answers to the specific needs of girls and women during their education
